KZUM Plans Move to College View

KZUM, Nebraska’s only non-profit community radio station, is pleased to announce that it will be moving its on-air studios and business office to 3534 South 48th Street in the spring of 2012. The new College View facilities will have street level access, ample off street parking, additional space for a second studio, and extra work and meeting areas for the KZUM staff and volunteers. Situated near bus lines and on one of Lincoln’s major arterial streets, the location will provide easy access and increased visibility for the station.

This is the first move for KZUM since 1988 when they moved into their present location at the Terminal Building in downtown Lincoln. “We have had a good run in our present location, but the Board feels that the new location will better serve the needs of the station and the Lincoln community as we move forward through the next several years,” says General Manager Cathy Behrns. “We are optimistic that we will continue to cultivate different types of programming, including broadcasting on the HD frequency. We are also looking forward to remote broadcasting from across our community.”

“A Facilities Committee has been looking at various possibilities for the past 18 months, including other sites in Lincoln or even staying in the Terminal Building,” says Facilities Committee Chair Jim Smith. “After much research, study and discussion, the committee, with the endorsement of the Board of Directors, decided on the new location. We are excited about the potential that comes with the new site.”

Details regarding a capital campaign will be announced in the near future to help with the costs of relocation as well as purchasing new equipment and furnishings. However, anyone who wishes to make a year–end tax deductible donation to this cause may do so at any time by check, cash or credit card by contacting the KZUM offices at 941 ‘O’ Street, Suite 1025, Lincoln, NE 68508 or calling the business office at 402-474-5086.

Meet KZUM's New Board Members

If you are a member of KZUM, you are entitled to vote for any proposed by-law changes or new board members of the organization. In September at our Annual Meeting, we opened the floor to nominations for the three open seats on the Sunrise Communications Board of Directors. There were no nominations from the floor, so the three people that were brought to the board as candidates from the Nominations Committee were automatically seated on the Board which will begin its term in 2012. KZUM welcomes [or re-welcomes] the following people, and wants to thank John Gilliam and Ryan Evans for their service on the board as their hard work comes to an end.

Even though his term on the board was due to end, our current Treasurer, Matt Joy, has agreed to serve another 3-year term. As a very valuable member of the team, Matt is a hard worker and has been a continuous supporter of the station for many years and we are very lucky to have him continue at the table.

Mickey Stubblefield was born in Mayfield, KY, and raised in McCook, NE before he moved to Lincoln in 1969. As owner of picture framing equipment, he has spent more than 10 years donating framed pictures to community centers, youth and crisis centers in the area. In the past, Mickey worked with Steve Alvis [former general manager] to secure donations of valuable and rare prints for fundraising events, along with framing band pictures for the KZUM business offices.

Mickey is also a graduate of “Leadership Lincoln Project ALL class - year four; and is proud to have had a cousin who was a DJ for KZUM at the 23rd and “D” Street location.

Lee Manns was born and raised in North Dakota, but she has lived in Lincoln for over 25 years now all the while working at UNL's Extended Education, in various positions. Lee and her husband do not have children, but have a dog named Newley (he's named after the handsome young deputy on Gunsmoke). She loves to travel, cook, listen to music, read, and watch movies. She has served on the board of trustees at her church for 3 years as a member, and as the board president during her 4th year.

She believes a station such as KZUM is vital to the community, and is a great outlet for local voices. She knows it’s important to provide music and views that are not represented on other stations and she would like to try to get more members to actively volunteer at station events. She would also like to see KZUM to be an even bigger presence in the Lincoln community than it already is - - at more concerts, festivals, and other community events.

KZUM's mission is to educate and build community through broadcast media, with diverse and independent voices that enrich the perspectives of our audiences.

Nebraska’s Only Independent Radio Station

KZUM has been a fixture in Lincoln since 1978 when it was formed to bring about more diverse programming in the capitol city through a community based program, one based from support through memberships, donations, grants from charitable foundations and underwriting.

KZUM-FM and KZUM-HD has studios and offices located on the tenth floor of the Terminal Building, located in downtown Lincoln, at 10th and "O" Streets.

We have over 100 volunteer programmers keeping our shows broadcasting 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

So, c’mon. Turn this electronic page and see what we’re all about. Check out our programming schedule or click on our streaming station signal. If you like what you see and hear then please consider supporting Nebraska’s only community based radio station by becoming a member or by underwriting a program.

The station’s mission gives voice to quality music, news and thoughtful discussion on local, national and world news while reaching an ever-widening audience with a more vibrant, artistic, diverse and quality programming schedule. Thanks for stopping by our website and come again!
